You know, I've been working full time for what seems like an eternity - my whole adult life really. However, the last 4 years have opened up my eyes to see what the potential of running, organizing and (my most favorite) marketing Renaissance Faires.
Yes, my husband and I have been lucky enough to put together two renaissance festivals here in MA, and I've learned quite a bit during this time. I am nervous about tomorrow, as we need to face the City of Gloucester, MA to let them know what we plan on doing. I plan on bringing photos, recommendations (and boy, did we get a lot of really nice ones, I guess it really didn't hurt to ask), map, schedule of event(s), ads/promotions, and wear something nice but comfortable.
IF all goes well, and we get the green light (which is what I'm praying for at this point in time) we will get recognition from everyone involved to say, hey, they went out of their way to help us...maybe this IS our sign that this is what we are supposed to be doing. AND well, if this boosts our careers into something we've always dreamed of doing, then we're doing it!
I guess my point is, that if you are stuck in a 9 - 5 job (or day gig as we musicians like to call it) then you really need to make things happen for yourself...opportunities are out there, you just have to figure out which ones are for you and just go for it!

Comment by Gia Volterra de Saulnier on August 2, 2011 at 1:15pm Thanks Alyice - I certainly appreciate the support. Yes, there is nothing wrong with people liking their jobs, in fact, I think that's what people really need to do...otherwise, it just lurks there waiting for people to hate their jobs => not wanting to do the job right - but I have the dream, and we're doing it while working still full time...one day...sigh.
I did an update so yes, we got the green light, and the festival was a success!
Comment by Alyice Edrich on July 29, 2011 at 2:57pm Good luck with the meeting! And you're right... the only way to make things happen is to get out there and do it.
My husband is a 9 to 5er for life... he likes the steady paycheck, he likes working for someone, he hates being his own boss and having to do it all. I have a friend who loves being a mailman. He said that other people want to be chiefs and that's cool for them, but he likes being an Indiana, LOL. He loves his job. He thinks its the greatest thing in the world. He gets to be outdoors every day, he meets and greets people every day, he gets tons of exercise. I applaud people who know who they are and are okay with working a 9 to 5 job. They do what they feel is best for them and have no regrets.
I, on the other hand, have worked both part-time and full-time, from the home for so many years, I am not sure I'd be comfortable in a 9 to 5 job... though there are days I dream of a steady paycheck, and being able to clock out and not have to think about work when I leave work.
I truly believe the key to becoming a DOER is to know what you like, what you really and truly want to do in life, and then working towards achieving that goal... whatever it may be.
I can't wait to hear more about your meeting... and YOUR GREEN LIGHT!
