It is pretty cool- I have never heard of this site until they introduced me!  (WARNING_could be addictive) You sign up for tophatter and you can watch a few live auctions happening right now to get a better picture-there is also a short tut on how it works.  When you walk into an auction (there is almost always a live auction happening) you see whats up on the block and you click bid if you want to bid- if you win it then you can pay through paypal.  you can also sell your stuff on most the auctions they have (although the one Im in is closed for sellers but open to buyers)  Things are up for bidding only for a short time just like a real live auction:)  You dont have to rsvp to walk into and bid on auctions but we have a goal to get as many rsvps before the auction as possible so we are giving away prizes to those who do rsvp in advance (That doesnt mean you HAVE to be at the auction but we would love for you to stop by)! There will be MANY more goodies to bid on then what you see when you click my link.  Hope that helps!  If you have any more questions feel free to ask;)
