Excerpt From My Forthcoming Book

Chapter Two: What Freedom Feels Like

“Exercise produces endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands” ~Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.

Each pound represented some scar from some thing. Abuse. Medication. Depression. I had stopped feeling alive. I think that might be part of the reason that people have such a hard time getting past the second or third day of a diet- which is one of the most intense disciplines of ones life.

Because you start feeling again. And frankly, there can be something said about numbness. The numb among us subscribe to that lie.
When I stopped multiplying the scars by gaining more, I found myself under each one healed, each pound gone.

I found a rider.

I found a writer.

I found a lover. A sexy, passionate, loving, creative, wild lover,

I found a girl who laughs, rarely found without a smile.

I found someone who could cry when someone else cried.

I started making eye contact. I don’t remember when I stopped making eye
contact, but I remember when I started.

I found a dreamer.

I found an achiever.

I came out from the dark.

This is what happens when you get from behind the refrigerator. You find out that you have been hiding behind lies that have replaced the true you. One pound at a time.

You can too.

How Does Weight Hold You Back?

I do not think it's necessarily the obvious answer of: less energy and stamina. For me, it was just a distraction. The obsessive thinking about food- waking up and saying- "I will diet today" and...

Dear Team Lose Weight With Laura,

4 lbs of water weight has fallen off this week, and man do I feel better. I think some of it was lodged in my brain, because I'm also thinking in a much more orderly fashion.

I went off the food plan. So I'd think about my body, my weight, my readers, food, my spirit, etc. etc. so much that it was all I was thinking about! My home suffered... what a MESS it had become.
"I can't find my checkbook, so I can't budget my shopping list, which isn't the worst thing- because there's no room in my fridge because of all of the things in there that are out of date, or just leaking everywhere, which made it very difficult to make good healthy choices and inspired me to just run to food, which I'm running away from. Because of the dishes in the sink and the clean ones in the dishwasher- half in the cubbards, which were left open, because I found myself looking for my checkbook half way through- and my goodness, my friends are going to be here in 5 minutes to go to NYC and I haven't packed- wow- they're going to see my messy house and if only I knew where that checkbook was, I wouldn't be going to NY without knowing what we have to spend- did I pay last months bills, or is it this month? My husband has such faith in me and AGH! Why did I just go off of my food plan again? I might as well just eat the rest of the box", and you know how the rest of the story goes. Press replay.

Day 5 and my house looks awesome. My brain feels clearer. My body feels better. I have confidence that I will make it through this month. I have said "no" to myself enough, reminding myself that I have you to write to- myself, God, my calling partner no longer enough to help me focus. I will say "no" again. Suddenly everything that had seemed so unattainable no longer seems that bad. I had to clear out the food distraction so I could access the rest of my faculties! And, I FEEL better!!

When my eating is in chaos, everything else teeters along at a lukewarm, mediocre pace. I just had to get through the first 3 days. Now the first 30 days.

Jump in where you are. There's no such thing as "late" with this!

You can do this!
I am SO proud of you!!
We're going to look and feel oh-so-fine this 2009!

Love ya!
