Thank you for the info!  I will definitely check out the website and do some reading on photography from the internet.

@Janice Mayo I really think you should look into photographing articles. When it comes to close ups, you should really concentrate on a lens (with macro capabilities) not so much on the camera (point and shoot with macro capabilities work quite well). As far as product photography... here are few things to consider.... daylight vs strobes. Softboxes are optional, but reflectors could be nice. May I also sugest a website CreativeLive.com They have free seminars while live streaming or you can purchase them and watch them at your convenience (check their calendar) and here is one with speedlights coming up http://www.creativelive.com/courses/speedlights-101-mark-wallace

As far as brand... major brands dont have major differences when it comes to $500 range. Nikon is a great company,  just note that great pictures are not made by camera, but a person behind them

Best of luck in your endevours

Hi Camera Club folks!  I hope I'm posing my question to the correct forum.

I am interested in purchasing a camera to take pictures of my products and for my online blog.  Up until now I've always been a point-and-shoot type person but the quality just isn't there especially for posting it on the web.  I did work for Ritz Camera back in college so I am familiar with the basics of an SLR.

Can someone recommend a great (professional) camera for close ups and anything else I may need (light box, filters, etc)?  I don't plan on opening a photography studio so nothing massive, but would like to photograph tablescapes, products and other fine details.  I'm somewhat leaning towards Nikon and something in the $500 range.

All suggestions are welcomed!  - Janice

 Hi Stacey,

Thank you so much for your input ! It means a lot to me :) Yes, I definitely planning on putting my photos in an online gallery. And yes, you are right, I shouldn't be giving away too many pictures for free. this is something that I'm learning every day, if I want to make a living form my photography I need to charge accordingly. .After shooting photos for over 10 years for free, it is a difficult habit to break. As it comes to focusing on the right task during the party, I definitely want to be 100% in charge of taking photos, I want kids to be kids, no 'cheesy' trained smiles, lots of laughter and and simple goofiness . Also there will be no make up, I want to capture a real kids in their happy moments, no projection of mass produced image of women on little girls faces. One of my friends was suggesting that might be a not a good idea, since a lot of moms like to have make up on kids. But I can't really take photos of kids that way . SO yes, I'm all about dress up and having fun, no fake smiles. I hope I will be able to capture some big happy memories. I really can't wait to start doing that :)

Hi @Aneta,

That sounds like you are giving them a lot and what concerns me is that you say you don't want to charge a lot.  I think you need to charge accordingly otherwise you will burn out quickly and will probably end up losing money in the end.  I would definitely cut out giving each party member 2 to 3 photos.  That's a lot of work!  Maybe just include something for the birthday girl like a 5X7 or 8X10 photo and then instead of GIVING them the proofs, have the best images in an online gallery where the attendees can just order what they like.

You will definitely need an assistant because it sounds like 2 very big things - the dress up part and the photo shoot part.  You need to decide where you want YOUR focus to be.

Let us know your progress!

 Hi Stacy ,

The idea this party  is to  bring the dressup party to clients house and have kids having blast dressing up and having photo shoot. My job would be provide all the props ( dresses, accessories etc ) and take photos. I would have to have an assistant as well to help kids dress up, make hair, etc. I'm just trying to figure out the pricing, not to make it too expensive. I would provide the birthday  package fee and that would include rental all the costumes, photo shoot and  10-15 photos for the b-day person, and 3 photos for every guest, any additional shoots could be purchased separately . Or should I just give 30-40 proofs to the b-day person and they can do what ever they want with that?I'm not 100% comfortable with giving up the proofs.
